BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team lost let one get away against Connecticut by a score of 3-2 to close out the FAU “Miken” Classic Sunday, March 7 in Boca Raton, Fla.
EMU pitcher Jamie Melchert had it going early on, retiring the first six batters she faced and striking out three in that span. The junior finished with five punch outs over six innings of work.
Nellie Coquillard gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead when she scampered home on a wild pitch by UConn's Saveriano. After the Huskies pushed across an unearned in their half of the third to tie the score, EMU regained the lead on Allison Scherer's RBI double to score her sister Jenny Scherer who tripled a batter previous.
UConn answered with another unearned run in the fourth after Melchert's throwing error allowed Brenneman to score from third, tying the game at 2-2. The Eagle defense committed three errors in all. In the sixth, the Huskies added the go-ahead score on a pair of hits, the back-breaker being a one out RBI double by Vaughan.
EMU's Courtney Nicholson singled with two outs in the seventh bringing up Kaylee Tolliver to pinch hit for Jessica Patterson. Saveriano then stepped up put an end to the threat with her ninth strikeout to end the game.
The Eagles finished the FAU “Miken” Classic with a 1-4 record, their only win coming against host FAU back on Friday, March 5. The Green and White will return home before traveling to Columbia, Mo. to take part in the Missouri Tournament March 19-21, hosted by UM.
EMU's next game will be against Northern Colorado at the Missouri Tournament Friday, March 19, at 11 a.m.
