The Eagles will play five games, kicking off the tournament with a first time opponent in Northern Colorado Friday at 11 a.m.
In addition, EMU will take on No. 3 Missouri, previously ranked Northwestern, and Ball State. OAKLEY SERVES AS INTERIM HEAD COACH: Head Coach Karen Baird, currently in her eighth year at Eastern Michigan University, is in the process of preparing for the arrival of her first born child and will take a break from her head coaching duties until she is ready to continue, per doctor's orders. In the meantime, fourth year Assistant Coach Eric Oakley will serve as interim head coach, overseeing all aspects of the program.
HOME OPENER TWO WEEKS AWAY: The Eastern Michigan University softball team will open up the 2010 home schedule at Varsity Field Wednesday, March 31, with a doubleheader against the University of Detroit-Mercy at 3 p.m. The Eagles will host 16 home games this season, two more than last year, making up a total of 11 home dates in 2010. The Green and White went 7-7 at the friendly confines of Varsity Field in 2009.
ON DECK FOR THE EAGLES: The DeMarini Invitational, hosted by the University of Missouri, will feature five teams including Northern Colorado, Northwestern, Ball State, host Missouri and Eastern Michigan. The Eagles are 1-4 against the host Tigers, who are currently ranked third in the nation, and are seeking a first-ever win against Northwestern, which they are 0-2 against. EMU will have two cracks at the previously ranked Wildcats, facing their Big Ten Conference foe March 19 and 21. Its meeting with Mid-American Conference opponent Ball State will go down as a non-conference affair. Both teams will meet during the MAC regular season April 10-11, in Muncie, Ind. Eastern will meet Northern Colorado for the first time in school history when they open the tournament Friday, March 19, at 11 a.m.
FAU “MIKEN” CLASSIC RECAP: The Eagles went 1-3 against FGCU, FAU and FIU in a South Florida swing just prior to the FAU “Miken” Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. In their five tournament games, the Green and White posted a 1-4 record to conclude a stretch of nine games in six days and 14 games in 10 days overall. Their lone win in the tournament was a 3-2 victory over host FAU. Stacie Skodinski provided the game-winning two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel EMU. It was the fourth one run win of the season for Eastern, which now sits 5-9 overall.
IGNOWSKI TOSSES GEM: Freshman Jenna Ignowski threw her first career complete game shutout Tuesday, March 2, defeating FGCU in game one of a doubleheader, 1-0. The Niles, Mich. native threw seven innings while striking out six batters and allowing just two hits.
ONE RUN ADVANTAGE: EMU boasts a 4-1 record in one run games this season, already reaching the halfway point of its total last season after going 8-9. The Eagles made it three consecutive one run victories after Jenna Ignowski's two-hit shutout, 1-0, win over FGCU March 2. Other one run wins have come against Georgia Southern (8-7), Villanova (3-2) and FAU (3-2).
MELCHERT MAKES GOOD IN FIRST CAREER START: After several solid relief appearances for the Eagles, junior transfer Jamie Melchert finally earned her first career start in a 3-2 extra-inning win over Florida Atlantic March 5. The native of Scottville, Mich. tossed eight, superb innings in which she allowed two runs (none earned) on five hits while striking out eight batters and walking just three. It was her first complete game victory as an Eagles and second win of the season.
SEEKING RUN SUPPORT: EMU pitching has recorded a respectable sub-4.00 ERA in the last six games, including an 8-0 loss to No. 18 Florida State, but have only one win to show for it. The offense, which ranked third in the MAC in hitting in 2009, has struggled of late to score just 21 runs In the past six games. The Green and White have registered just eight runs, an average of 1.33 runs per game during that span. The Eagles nearly closed out the FAU “Miken” Classic with a win over UConn, taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth before the Huskies tacked on the tying and go-ahead runs due to a couple EMU fielding miscues to pull out the narrow victory.
