Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – It took a few extra outs, but the Eastern Michigan University softball team was able to snap its four-game skid and defeat host Florida Atlantic University, 3-2, thanks to Stacie Skodinski's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth at the FAU “Miken” Classic Friday, March 5.

Skodinski's game-winning single to right center came on an 0-2 pitch and drove in McKenna Russ and Jessica Patterson in a thrilling eight-inning win on the road. The junior, Skodinski, has been the hottest hitter for the Eagles of late. She went 2-for-4 in the game and drove in the biggest two runs for the Eagles so far this season.

On the flip side, Jamie Melchert turned in one of the best starts for an Eagle pitcher this season. The junior went the distance, allowing just two runs (no earned) on five hits while striking out eight and walking three.

Allison Scherer gave the Eagles their first lead of the game when she singled through the right side to drive in Lauren Delapaz from third base. At the time, it seemed as if that may be enough, but Eagle miscues in the field allowed the Owls to crawl back into the game.

In the sixth, Kerri Croney came through with a two-out single to Delapaz at third. The junior at the hot corner was challenged again by the next hitter, Blair Bodenmiller who beat the throw to first and then advanced to second on Delapaz's overthrow, which in turn, allowed Croney to score, knotting up the game at 1-apiece.

In the eighth, FAU's Hailey Broyles was placed on second due to the international tie-breaking rule. After Melchert struck out the leadoff hitter, an error by the Eagle left fielder allowed Ambar Jones to reach. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice and the Eagles forced out the lead runner at third for the second out. The next batter, Bodenmiller, struck again with an RBI single up the middle to score Jones and give the Owls a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles then wasted no time answering the call. After Patterson was placed on second, Russ laid down a sacrifice bunt, but FAU had no play, putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Russ stole second base and two batters later, Skodinski played the hero with a two-run single to win it.

The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 6, when they take on Michigan State and Florida A&M. First pitch with in-state rival, MSU, is set for 1 p.m. followed by a match-up with the Rattlers at 4 p.m.
