DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished in fourth place among some of the nation's elite during the second-annual FAU Spring Break Championship here at the 6,722-yard, par-71 Gleneagles Country Club, March 26-28.
The Eagles shot the second-lowest round of the day to surpass the University of Michigan (third after Saturday), Florida Gulf Coast (fifth after Saturday) and host Florida Atlantic (sixth after Saturday) with an 865 (293-290-282) team score. EMU finished three strokes behind Penn State (862) for third place and five strokes away from runner-up Iowa (860).
The University of Illinois led wire-to-wire to take home the tournament title for the second straight year. The 10th-ranked Illini were the only team to post an under par score (-10) and won the event by a commanding 18 strokes.
The Illini's Chris DeForest won individual medalist honors with three rounds under par and a total eight-under-par 205 score -- four strokes better than the second-place (209 score) trio of Eastern Michigan's Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary), Notre Dame's Doug Fortner and Iowa's Barrett Kelpin.
The runner-up showing marks Burke's third career top-five finish, and his first since placing third at last year's Spring Break Championship, March 27-29, 2009, with a two-under 211 (64-75-72). Additionally, his back-to-back rounds of 69 pushed his career rounds at par-or-better to 25 in just 92 attempts.
Classmate Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) also picked up his fourth career top 10 finish with a three-day mark of 213 (70-76-67) for eighth place. His final round 67 surpassed his previous best 18-hole mark of 69. Junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) turned in a final round 72 to tie for 22nd place with a 218 (73-73-72). Rounding out the lineup, senior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) finished at 228 (79-75-74) and 230 (82-73-75), respectively.
