Jeppesen Tied for Fifth at the Spring Break Championship

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – With two golfers at par-or-better, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team is tied for seventh place along with the University of Minnesota here Friday, March 26, following the opening round of the Spring Break Championship at Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla.
Senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) is tied for fifth place with a one-under 70 while classmate Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) is just one shot back in a tie for 11th place. Junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) notched a 73 to sit in 25th followed by Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) with a 79 and 82, respectively.
The University of Illinois leads the 16-team field with a two-under-par 282 team score. The No. 10-ranked Illini, the defending tournament champions, stand six strokes ahead of University of Notre Dame (288). Penn State University and the University of Michigan are tied in third place with a four-over-par 290 over the first 18 holes of the event.
Notre Dame's Doug Fortner leads the individual race with an impressive seven-under-par 64 score - heading a total 10 players posting below-par scores on Gleneagles' 6,777-yard, par-71 layout. Chris DeForest of Illinois is three strokes behind after a first-round 67 score, while Nick Newcomb of Murray State and Kelly Kretz of Marquette are tied in third place with 68 scores.
Saturday's play will begin on the first hole between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., in descending order according to the first-round results.
