YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team travels to Rio Verde, Ariz. for the 2010 Rio Verde Invitational hosted by Western Michigan University. The three-day event takes places from March 5-7 on the par 71, 6,260-yard Quail Run Course at the Rio Verde Country Club.
Competing with the Green and White this weekend will be Akron, Arkansas-Little Rock, Ball State, Bowling Green, Bradley, Cincinnati, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri State, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Penn State, Southern Illinois, Toledo, Western Michigan, Xavier.
Originally known as the East/West Rio Verde Invitational, the event is in its eighth year. Western Michigan won the inaugural invitational in the spring of 2003 with a score of 614. The event moved from a 36-hole to a 54-hole format in 2005. Last year's team champion was Kansas (294-295-294=883) and the individual medalist was the Jayhawks' Meghan Gockel (74-73-71=218). Gockel defeated UALR's Sara Wikstrom on the first playoff hole to earn medalist. It was the first time in tournament history the competition went into extra holes. Both Kansas and Gockel are back to defend their titles.
This year's tournament boasts eight teams ranked in the top 100 according to GolfStat.com and two ranked in the top 75. Minnesota leads the way, ranking No. 56 followed by Michigan (No. 75) and Kansas (No. 77). Eastern Michigan is the highest ranked MAC team at No. 85.
