GOODYEAR, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team used four rounds of par-or-better to get off to a great start at the 2010 Desert Shootout at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Eagles reside in third place with a eight-under 280 on the opening day of action, thanks enlarge part to a five-under 67 from Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and three-under 69 from Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario -Waterloo Secondary). Lemons is tied for second place while Burke is tied for 12th place.
Pacific's Alex Johnson shot a six-under par 66, leading the Tigers to a two-stroke lead at 11-under par 277. Kansas State (279) is second, followed by EMU (280), VCU (281), Wichita State (282) and Xavier (282) rounding out the top five.
Junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) and senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) each fired even-par rounds of 72 to sit in 37th place. In his return to the Valley of the Sun, Adam Winwood (Epping, Essex, UK-t. Johns (South Mountain (Ariz.) CC) posted a 74 for 63rd. Competing as an individual, Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia-Centennial) struggled on the afternoon with a round of 90 for 102nd place.
The second round of the 2010 Desert Shootout will be played Friday morning with the first EMU player teeing off at 8:30 a.m. All Friday tee times were moved up 30 minutes. Saturday's final round is set for a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
