YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team just edged instate rival Western Michigan University Saturday afternoon, Feb. 13, as the Eagles walked away with a 188.200-188.125 victory on Senior Day in Warner Gymnasium.
EMU improves to 2-4 (1-2 MAC) with the win, while WMU drops to 3-10 (1-3 MAC) with the loss.
Seniors Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.- Spring Lake Park), Samantha Golden (Denville, N.J.- Morris Knolls), and Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario- Widdifield) were honored by their teammates following the win.
The Eagles started the meet off strong, with junior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorne Woods, Ill.- Carmel) carding a 9.650, and Grigg earning a 9.600, to finish first and second in the first rotation on the vault.
Freshman Kaylyn Millick (Washington, Pa.- Trinity) finished tied for second with Grigg on the bars with a 9.550, just under WMU's Meghan Donovan who recorded a 9.675. The pair also finished first and third on the beam with Millick recording a 9.725, and Grigg a 9.550.
Grigg tallied solid marks in each event, carding a 9.600 on the vault, a 9.550 on the bars and beam and a 9.750 in the floor exercise to finish with the top all-around score of the day at 38.450.
Sophomore Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.- La Cueva) had a strong performance in the floor exercise earning a 9.600, to help the Green and White win their first Mid-American Conference meet.
The Eagles are on the road next weekend for a Sunday afternoon meet against Bowling Green State University, Feb. 21, in Bowling Green, Ohio at 2 p.m.
