Day One of EMU Invite Concludes with Men in 1st, Women in 2nd

The Eagle men tally 365 points while the women total 189 after first day action at the EMU Invitational

– Through eight events during the first session at the Eastern Michigan University Invitational, the EMU men lead with 365 points while the women hold steady in second place with 189 points, following Friday's action at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium.

The men took five of the eight events highlighted by meet record time of 2:00.45 by Troy Esentan in the 200 Breaststroke. In the 100 butterfly, the Eagles put forth the one-two punch with Owen Grey touching the wall at 1:51.30 followed by Aaron Lawson in second with a time of 1:51.97.

Justin Griggs boasted a first place finish in the 100 freestyle posting a time of 45.29, and he also joined teammates Dylan Kab, Jacob Hanson, and Matt Zavislak in winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:02.70.

On the women's side, Michigan currently sits in first after winning three of the day's events. Briana Emig shattered a pool record in the 1,650 free, finishing first in 16:22.03 marking a three-second improvement on the previous record that was set in 2008.

In the 100 free, Sarah Kowalski narrowly edged Michigan's Natasha Moody, touching the wall just two-hundredths of a second faster at 51.36 for the victory.

Action will continue with the second session beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Jones Natatorium. The third session, which begins at 6 p.m., will conclude the annual event.
