FOR THE 35TH TIME: The 2010-11 season marks the 35th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 49-22 overall record and a 34-16 MAC mark in now his seventh season.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: The Miami women's swimming and diving team enters this weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference match up on Saturday, Oct. 30, outscoring the Bulls 193.5-103.5. The RedHawks took first place in 14 of the day's 16 events, led by Chelsey Bruington who finished first in both the 200 and 500 freestyles, posting times of 1:53.65 and 5:08.22, respectively.
HIGH FIVE: Briana Emig has proved to be a dominant force for the Eagles after finishing first five times so far this season. Emig took first in the 1,000 freestyle against Ohio on Oct. 29, touching the wall at 10:15.14. In the 500 freestyle, Emig also claimed first in the event with a time of 4:58.98. She was barely two seconds shy of yet another first place finish in the 200 freestyle, but Ohio's Amanda Traylor snuck ahead for the victory. On Oct. 30, Emig again took first in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:24.40 and was also first to touch the wall in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.89. In the 500 free, she captured yet another top finish in 5:02.52.
SIX AND COUNTING: Last season, Head Coach Loren "Buck" Smith was selected as Mid-American Conference Diving Coach of the Year for the sixth time after three of his divers finished in the top-five in the one meter including Danielle Hulvey, who captured a second place medal and was selected to the All-MAC Second-Team.
GETTING THEIR FEET WET: Some new faces should have an immediate impact for the Eagles this season, as Linn expects Jacquelyn Swartz, Ansley Crenshaw, Paige Copeland, and Alexa Piranian to contribute early. Also joining the incoming class are Jennifer Bichsel, Kaitlyn Buckwell, Meghan Richardson, Heather Saule, and Melynee Saya.
