Eagles unable to take hold of MAC West Division

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- After pulling even at 1-1, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team could not overcome the Huskies of Northern Illinois, falling 3-1 (20-25, 28-26, 25-27, 21-25) on Sat., Oct. 9, in a Mid-American Conference contest here at the Convocation Center. The Eagles hit .187 (50-18-171) while the Huskies tallied a .229 (67-24-188) clip.
EMU drops to 17-6 overall and 4-2 in MAC play, while NIU moves to 19-2 (5-1).
Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Green and White with 22 kills, with freshman Erin Short (Orrville, ohio-Orrville) added 11. Junior libero Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) had a team-best 26 digs, with junior setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) handing out a match-high 43 assists. Mason also added 22 digs and 3 blocks for the Eagles.
In the first set, EMU quickly found themselves down 11-4, but later closed the gap. NIU had a service error by Lauren Wicinski, followed by two attack errors by Meghan Romo and Mary Kurisch. A bad set error by Kristin Hoffman and another attack error brought the Eagles within three, 22-19. However the Huskies regained control and finished out the set with a 25-20 win.
The Eagles found themselves up 2-0 in the second set of the night, with a kill by Iaquaniello and a service ace by Mason. EMU held their lead until the set became tied at 5-5. After an attack error by NIU, the score was brought to 10-10, and the Eagles regained the lead with a kill from Iaquaniello from Mason. Through the remainder of the set, the score stayed within one point until the Eagles pulled ahead 27-26. A service ace by Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio- Notre Dame Academy) finished out the set in favor on EMU.
After two attack errors by the Huskies, the Green and White jumped ahead 3-0 in set three. EMU maintained a lead through most of the set, but the Huskies slowly chipped away, bringing the score to a 24-24 tie. Then Eagles then fell 27-25 after NIU kills and an attack error by Swartz concluded the set.
The final set proved to be a battle for both teams. The Eagles fell to a 3-0 deficit, but battled back to a 11-11 score after kills by Roback and Iaquaniello, as well as blocks by Mason and Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich. -Westland John Glenn). The remainder of the set swayed back and forth, but NIU managed to stay ahead of the Eagles and never relinquished their lead, taking the final-set win 25-21.
EMU returns conference play Friday, Oct. 15, versus Miami before closing out the week Saturday, Oct. 16, against Bowling Green. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti.
