YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A visiting University of Toledo football team used a big-play offense and some timely defensive turnovers to record a 42-7 win over the Eastern University Eagles in a Mid-American Conference West Division game here in Rynearson Stadium Saturday, Oct. 30, in the annual Band Day contest.
Toledo, now a perfect 5-0 in MAC play and 6-3 overall, had three long touchdown passes for more than 50 yards in the win with quarterback Terrance Owens leading the way, completing 10 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Danny Noble. The leading Toledo rusher was David Pasquale.
EMU, now 1-8 overall and 1-4 in league action, was once again paced by sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) who completed 15 passes for 170 yards and also rushed 17 times for 50 yards. Corey Welch (Akron, Ohio-Green) gained 24 yards on five carries.
Toledo's starting quarterback, Austin Dantin, was injured on a big hit on the Rocket's second possession of the game and his replacement, Owens came on to throw a short pass to Noble on his first play from scrimmage that ended up going 74 yards for a touchdown at the 11:24 mark of the first quarter. David Pasquale rushed for the two-point conversion to give Toledo the early 8-0 lead.
The Eagles took advantage of a turnover to pull within one late in the second quarter. EMU punter Jay Karutz (North Ryde, Australia-Holy Cross) booted the ball to the Toledo four-yard line where Eric Page fumbled the kick, giving the Eagles the ball at the UT four.
Welch then made that turnover pay off two plays later, bulling his way through the middle of the line for a one-yard touchdown run. Kody Fulkerson (Roseville, Ohio-Maysville) added the PAT kick to cut Toledo's advantage to one, 8-7, with 5:43 left in the second quarter.
Toledo would come back to add a score with 1:13 remaining in the half when Owens found Noble in the center of the end zone for a six-yard touchdown pass. This time the Rockets kicked the extra point, with Bill Claus successful on the PAT and Toledo headed to intermission with a 15-7 lead.
The Rockets would make it a 22-7 game with 3:01 left in the third quarter when Adonis Thomas raced 68 yards down the left sideline on a pass from Owens for a Toledo score. Claus added the PAT.
Toledo came right back on another big play to take a 29-7 lead with just 47 seconds left in the third quarter when Owens found Page for a 53-yard touchdown strike, his fourth scoring pass of the day. Claus once again added the PAT.
Toledo's Pasquale then raced 55-yards to put the Rockets in scoring position again and it led to an eight-yard touchdown pass from Page to Pasquale with Claus adding the kick for a 36-7 Rocket lead with 10:31 left in the game.
Toledo would take advantage of its second interception to make it 42-7 with 8:15 left in the game when Alex Pettee scored three plays later on a four-yard run. Claus missed the PAT.
EMU will be idle next weekend, Nov. 6, before heading to Kalamazoo for a Nov. 13 meeting with West Division foe Western Michigan.
