KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football dropped a 45-30 shootout to Western Michigan University here Saturday, Nov. 13, in a Mid-American Conference West Division game played in Waldo Stadium. With the score tied at 24 in the third quarter, the Broncos offense caught fire to out-score the Eagles 21-6 over the final 21 minutes to claim the victory.

With the loss Eastern Michigan falls to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the MAC, while Western Michigan improves to 3-3 in the league and 4-6 on the year.

Sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) completed 13-of-24 passes for 214 yards and three touchdowns. The Green Springs, Ohio native also surpassed 100-yards on the ground for the fifth-time in 2010, finishing with 159 yards and a score. Freshman Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) caught four balls for 40 yards, while senior Tyrone Burke (Syracuse, N.Y.-Corcoran-Milford Academy) grabbed two passes for 45 yards and a score. In total, the Eagles racked up 491 yards in 80 plays.

Defensively, the Eagles were led by junior Martavius Cardwell (Flint, Mich.-Carman-Ainsworth) with nine stops on the afternoon, while Kelip Goodwin (South Haven, Mich.-South Haven) added seven tackles.

For WMU, quarterback Alex Carder ran the ball seven times for 37 yards while going 17-for-21 for 349 yards and four scores via the air.

The Broncos opened the contest with a four-play, 79-yard scoring drive that was capped with a nine-yard touchdown reception by Brian Fields from Carder. John Potter's extra point was good to make it 7-0 with just 1:31 elapsed in the game. Western would tack on another Carder touchdown strike on its second possession, a 20-yard pass completion to Juan Nunez with 6:25 to play in the first quarter. The extra point sailed through the uprights to make it 14-0 in favor of WMU.

Unphased by the 14-point hole, Gillett would direct the Eagles down field in just eight plays. On 3rd-and-5 at the WMU 32-yard-line, Gillett called his own number and scampered around the right end for the touchdown. The 32-yard scoring run was the longest of the sophomore signal caller's season and the second longest of his career. Sophomore Sean Graham (Orchard Lake, Mich.-Orchard Lake St. Marys-Florida State) tacked on the PAT to make it 14-7 with 2:34 left in the opening frame.

After a WMU field goal made it 17-7, the Eagles would again march 80 yards in 10 plays for a score. On 4th-and-9 at the Broncos' 29-yard line, Gillett scampered before floating a pass that freshman Chaz Mitchell (Lexington, Ky.-Bryan Station) was able to haul down in the back of the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point followed to again cut the deficit to three, 17-14, with 6:07 left in the second quarter.

The shootout was on. Western Michigan's Fields would cross the goal line on a six-yard rush less than two minutes later for his second score of the afternoon. However, Eastern Michigan answered with a 40-yard touchdown strike to a streaking Burke to make it 24-21 with 1:14 left in the frame.

On the ensuing kickoff Eastern was able to get the ball back, as Herb Waits (Saginaw, Mich.-Swan Valley) knocked the ball away to give the Eagles the football at the WMU 35 yard-line. Despite the tremendous field position, the Eagles were unable to make the Broncos pay. The teams exchanged a pair of turnovers inside the last 30 seconds of the period with the teams heading to the locker room at the half with Western clinging to the 24-21 advantage.

With a steady rain falling to begin the second half, Eastern would knot the score at 24 on a 20-yard chip-shot field goal by Graham at the 8:32 mark of the third quarter. But the deadlock would be short-lived, as Western regained the seven point edge, 31-24, with a touchdown on its next possession.

Then on the first play of the fourth quarter, Carder found Fields in the flat and he was able to scoot 47-yards to pay dirt for the score. The extra point by Potter was good to make it 38-24 with 14:50 still to play.

Not to be outdone Gillett found Garrett Hoskins (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Creston) in-stride for a 32-yard completion and the touchdown. The extra point was no good though, to keep WMU up just eight points, 38-30.

The big plays and fireworks continued for the Brown and Gold. A 66-yard touchdown reception by Nunez followed on the first play of the next Western Michigan possession to make it 45-30 with 9:13 showing on the clock.

Eastern would get no closer the rest of the way as Western Michigan captured the 15-point decision.

Eastern plays its final road game of the 2010 campaign Saturday, Nov. 20, against the University at Buffalo. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at UB Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y.. WEMU (89.1 FM) and WCHB (1200 AM) will carry the game on the radio. Locally and throughout the state of Michigan, the contest will be televised on Sports Time Ohio, ESPN Game Plan and ESPN3.com.
