Football Shuffles Off to Buffalo Saturday, Nov. 20

THE TEAMS: The Eastern Michigan University football team will head to Buffalo, N.Y. for a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game Saturday, Nov. 20, at UB Stadium. Game time is 2 p.m. on the Sportexe 46 artificial turf in UB Stadium. The Eagles, 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the MAC, are coming off a 45-30 setback at Western Michigan, Nov. 13. Buffalo is 2-8 overall and 1-5 in league play after a 20-3 loss to a visiting Ball State team Friday night, Nov. 12.
WEMU (89.1 FM) and WCHB (1200 AM) will carry the game on the radio. Locally and throughout the state of Michigan, the contest will be televised on Sports Time Ohio, ESPN Game Plan and ESPN3.com
ALL-TIME VS. BUFFALO: Buffalo and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for just the fourth time in history when the two square off Saturday, Nov. 20, in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Eagles won the first matchup, 24-20, Oct. 27, 2001 and followed up with a 37-34 win, Sept. 9, 2004, with both games being played in Ypsilanti.
Eastern made its first Buffalo football trip a positive one with a 38-14 win in the 2005 season finale, Nov. 19, at UB Stadium. Junior wide receiver Eric Deslauriers caught two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Matt Bohnet to lead the Eagles to victory in that 2005 contest. Tailback Anthony Sherrell ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns and place-kicker Andrew Wellock tied the EMU record for longest field goal with a 52-yard three-pointer.
RETURNING HOME TO NEW YORK: The Eagles have just one player on their roster from the state of New York. Wide receiver Tyrone Burke is a native of Syracuse, N.Y. and played his high school football at Corcoran. He went on to prep school at Milford (Conn.) Academy before enrolling at EMU for the 2006 season. The 5-foot-11, 199-pound Burke, has earned three letters for the Eagles after playing in 42 career games, hauling in 49 passes for 650 yards and four touchdowns. He recorded his first touchdown pass reception of the season at WMU, Nov. 13, with a 40 yarder.
CRANKING UP THE “O”: The EMU offense turned in a solid performance last weekend, Nov. 13, in a 45-30 setback at Western Michigan. Sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) rushed 22 times for 159 yards and one touchdown, a career-best 32-yard run, and also passed for 214 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-24 passing. His three-touchdown performance tied his single-game best of three set earlier this season against Ball State, Oct. 16.
TWO TURN IN FIRSTS: EMU wide receivers Tyrone Burke (Syracuse, N.Y.-Corcoran-Milford (Conn.) Academy) and Chaz Mitchell (Lexington, Ky.-Bryan Station) both turned in their first touchdown receptions of the season at Western Michigan Saturday, Nov. 13. Burke, who is currently third on the team in receptions with 19 for 182 yards, had two catches for 45 yards, including a touchdown grab of 40 yards against the Broncos. Mitchell had one catch against Western and he made it count for a 29-yard touchdown.
PRIEST PREYS ON BRONCOS: Senior tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Military Academy) returned from a one-game suspension to gain 87 yards on 26 rushes at Western Michigan, Nov. 13.
TOP OFFENSIVE OUTPUT: EMU turned in 491 yards in total offense against Western Michigan last weekend, Nov. 13, the best single-game effort this season. The Eagles had 490 yards in total offense at Ball State, Oct. 16,
GILLETT MAKES A MOVE UPWARDS: Sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) has played just 19 games for the Eagles, earning 13 starts, but has made significant advancement in several EMU career categories. Gillett has rushed 244 times for 1,155 yards and seven touchdowns and has completed 185-of-348 passes for 2,293 yards and 16 touchdowns in those 19 games. He has recorded 592 total offensive plays (rush and pass) for 3,448 total offensive yards. He is currently ranked 10th all-time in total offensive yards, just the 14th player in school history to reach 3,000. His 185 career completions is good for the 12th spot while his 2,293 career passing yards is 11th in history and his 16 career touchdown passes is 11th.
TOP HALF OF THE MAC: EMU finds itself in the top five in five team categories in the latest Mid-American Conference statistics report. The Eagles are third in three categories, including rushing offense (167.0), punting (36.3) and time of possession (31:30). Eastern is fourth in total offense (348.8) and fifth in third-down conversion (37.9 percent).
HITTING THE 30s: A total of 15 current EMU players have participated in 30 or more games during their careers.
