THE TEAMS: Following an off week, the Eastern Michigan University football team heads to Kalamazoo, Mich. Saturday, Nov. 13, for a 2 p.m. Mid-American Conference West Division battle with the Broncos of Western Michigan University. EMU is coming off a bye week, Nov. 6. Western Michigan is currently 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the MAC after a 26-22 road loss to West Division rival Central Michigan in a game played Friday, Nov. 5, in Mount Pleasant.
ALL-TIME VS. WMU: Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan will be meeting for the 46th time in school history. Western holds a 28-15-2 edge in the series and have won the last two games. EMU posted a 19-2 win over a visiting WMU team, Oct. 27, 2007, for its last win against the Broncos.
In that 2007 EMU win, what started as a defensive struggle turned into an Eastern Michigan University offensive explosion as the Eagles recorded a 19-2 Mid-American Conference West Division victory. The first half ended in a baseball-like 3-2 EMU lead. The EMU defense kept its pressure on in the second half and the offense came to life with 16 unanswered points for the 19-2 win. The Green and White forced six Western Michigan turnovers, with three interceptions and three fumbles.
Senior tailback Pierre Walker (Detroit, Mich.-Central) had a career day on the ground, rushing 33 times for a career-high 151 yards. Redshirt freshman safety Ryan Downard (Lima, Ohio-Shawnee) turned in two interceptions on the day, increasing his season total to six.
The Eagles piled up 255 yards on the ground and added 137 through the air for 392 yards in total offense while the defense limited the Broncos to just 199 yards in total offense on the day and just 53 yards on the ground.
TIME FOR A REST: A nicked up Eastern Michigan University football team got a chance to heal with a week off, Nov. 6. The Eagles swing back into action Saturday, Nov. 13, with a 2 p.m. game at Western Michigan.
GILLETT MAKES A MOVE UPWARDS: Sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) has played just 18 games for the Eagles, earning 12 starts, but has made significant moves upwards in several EMU career categories. Gillett has rushed 22 times for 996 yards and six touchdowns and has completed 172-of-324 passes for 2,079 yards and 13 touchdowns in those 18 games. He has recorded 546 total offensive plays (rush and pass) for 3,075 total offensive yards. He is currently ranked 14th all-time in total offensive yards, just the 14th player in school history to reach 3,000. His 172 career completions is good for the 13th spot and just 11 previous players have reached the 200 mark while his 2,079 career passing yards is 15th in history.
BIGGEST COMEBACK: EMU trailed by 21 points, Oct. 16, after Ball State raced out to a 21-point lead midway through the second quarter before the Eagles mounted the biggest comeback in a win in school history. Eastern rallied to out-score the Cardinals, 41-17, the rest of the way for the 41-38 overtime win. The only other EMU team to rally from a 20 points or more deficit in a win was the 2000 squad that trailed, 32-12, and scored 27 unanswered points to defeat Northern Illinois, 39-32, Nov. 11, in Rynearson Stadium.
DOUBLE-DIGIT STOPS: EMU linebackers Marcus English (Cincinnati, Ohio-Trotwood Madison) and Neal Howey (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's) tied for the team lead in tackles, Oct. 30, at home against Toledo. Both players had 10 stops each to lead the Eagles. Howey also had 1.5 tackles-for-loss of three yards. English also forced a fumble in that contest.
FIVE EAGLES SUSPENDED: EMU Head Football Coach Ron English has suspended five players indefinitely. The players are: redshirt sophomore linebacker Steve Brown (Charlottesville, Va.-St. Anne's Belfield), senior wide receiver Tyrone Burke (Syracuse, N.Y.-Corcoran-Milford Academy), senior linebacker Tim Fort (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield), senior tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Academy), and senior safety Latarrius Thomas (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.-Smyrna Beach).
TOP HALF OF THE MAC: EMU finds itself in the top six in four team categories in the latest Mid-American Conference statistics report. The Eagles are third in net punting (36.6), third in time of possession (30:36), fifth in rushing offense (154.8), tied for fourth in sacks given up (17) and sixth in total offense (333.0). Individually, quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) is sixth in the MAC in total offense (203.1), and Corey Welch (Akron, Ohio-Green) is third in kickoff returns (21.6).

Although no official NCAA record exists, the EMU-Virginia contest is believed to be the first football game on the Division I FBS level with the opposing head coaches, EMU's Ron English and Virginia's Mike London, and athletic directors, Dr. Derrick Gragg for EMU and Craig Littlepage at Virginia, all being African-Americans.
