FOR THE 34TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 34th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 46-17 overall record and a 32-12 MAC mark in now his sixth season.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS: Miami University is the reigning MAC Champions and have 15 titles overall to its resume. They are currently ranked atop the CSCAA Division I Mid-Major poll and sit 7-4 on the season and 3-2 in MAC dual meets, but the RedHawks are coming off a 167.5-132.5 loss to Ohio last weekend in Athens. Miami's last dual meet win was at home over Cincinnati back on Jan. 15. The Eagles defeated Miami at home last season, 157-131.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan won its final two home meets last weekend by defeating Wayne State Friday, Jan. 22 and Ball State Saturday, Jan. 23. Their win over Ball State moved the Eagles to above .500 for the season at 5-4 overall and 3-2 in MAC action. EMU won the first nine events on the afternoon with Briana Emig winning the 200- and 1,000-yard freestyle. Chelsea Allard won two events on the day as well, taking the 100- and 200-yard breaststoke while Sarah Kowalski and Wesley Blassneck took home wins in the 100- and 500-yard freestyle. Danielle Hulvey has come on strong as of late as she was victorious in the one meter dive. EMU won 11 of the 16 events against the Cardinals.
EAGLES AND REDHAWKS: The Eagles are currently riding a two-meet win streak against the RedHawks, snapping a six-meet losing skid prior. The Eagles are looking to make this recent success against Miami a mainstay as the RedHawks have taken 25-of-30 meetings all-time. EMU got its first win over MU in 1992-93 and the Eagles are looking to break even under Head Coach Peter Linn as they are currently 2-3 against the RedHawks in his tenure.
EMU RANKED EIGHTH IN MID-MAJOR POLL: The Eagles are ranked eighth in the CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Swimming & Diving Team Poll released on Dec. 27. They follow top-ranked and Mid-American Conference foe, Miami, Boston University, Towson, Oakland, UW-Milwaukee, Florida Gulf Coast and Western Kentucky.
