YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team closed out the home portion of its 2009-10 schedule with a, 155.5-133.5, win over Ball State Saturday, Jan. 23 at Jones Natatorium.
With the win, the Eagles pushed their record to 5-4 overall, 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference and will compete in three more meets before the MAC Championships begin Feb. 24-27 in Oxford, Ohio.
The Eagles gained a huge advantage over the Cardinals early on as they won the first nine events, led by Briana Emig who captured the 1,000-yard free and 200-yard free. She out-touched teammate Samantha Partridge by .76-hundreths of a second to win the 200 free in a time of 1:53.17.
In the first event of the day, the 400-yard medley relay, EMU placed first and second with its 'A' and 'B' squads. Sarah Maraskine and Lauren Kalinosky finished 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke with Maraskine taking the win with a time of 58.65.
Chelsea Allard was a two-event winner on the day, taking the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke while Sarah Kowalski and Wesley Blassneck took home wins in the 100- and 500-yard freestyle. Elisa Torres won the 200-yard butterfly and Danielle Hulvey prevailed in the one meter dive as EMU went onto win 11 of the day's 16 events.
Prior to the meet, there was a moment of silence in honor of the late Michael H. Jones who passed away last November. He led the men's team to four national titles during his tenure, but undoubtedly established a winning tradition for both the men's and women's programs in his time at EMU.
The Eagle women will hit the road next Saturday, Jan. 30, to take on Miami in their only other trip to Oxford before the MAC Championships.
