ABOUT THE ZIPS: After going unbeaten in its first three matches of the year, Akron has suddenly hit a speed bump, losing three straight heading into MAC play this weekend. The Zips, who finished last season with a 7-9-2 overall record, 2-7-2 in conference play, have their core offensive players returning this season, including Britni Back, who led the team in goals and points in 2008. She currently leads the team with two goals and six points through six games. Chris Pfau is in his second season as head coach of Akron after spending the previous three years at Evansville. The Zips enter play on Friday with a 2-3-1 mark and will kick off a weekend home set with the Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS Ohio enters play this weekend on a roll with two straight wins over Morehead State and IPFW heading into MAC play. Erin Schwenke was a big reason for those two wins as she scored a game-winner in each and claimed Player of the Week honors in the MAC this week. She leads the Bobcats in goals and points with three and six, respectively. Stacy Strauss is in her tenth season as the Bobcats head coach and has a 81-88-13 career record leading up to this weekend. Sunday's tilt with EMU is slated for 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan wrapped up the non-conference slate last weekend, playing host to IUPUI and Michigan State. IUPUI was resilient last Friday, Sept. 18, answering a late EMU goal with a desperation push and an equalizer with 24 seconds remaining in regulation. Ashley Rodrigues thought she had scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute only to see it disappear seconds before the horn. In double overtime, with the score still tied, IUPUI once again stunned the Eagles with the game-winner as time expired, scoring on a rebound right in front of the goal. Against Michigan State Sunday, Sept. 20, Paige Sheridan scored in the 12th minute to give EMU an early lead, but
NEAR UPSET OVER MICHIGAN STATE: The Eagles fell just shy of capturing an upset win over Michigan State Sept. 20. Paige Sheridan scored the go-ahead goal in the 12th minute to put EMU on top, 1-0. The Spartans, who entered play ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, wasted no time challenging Eagle goalkeeper, Mona Budani. The high-powered offensive attack, featuring Laura Heyboer and Lauren Hill who combined for 13 of the team's 17 goals entering the game, laced shot after shot towards the EMU goal tender. They put up 33 shots in all and finally got the equalizer in the 69th minute from Heyboer. Sheridan had a chance to give the Eagles a win in the second overtime, but her close range shot went wide of the goal. EMU snapped a two-game losing streak to the Spartans.
EAGLES OPEN MAC PLAY: Eastern Michigan opens Mid-American Conference play this weekend with games at Akron and Ohio on Friday and Sunday. The Eagles went 4-2-2 in the non-conference slate, nearly the same record as last season's 5-2-2 non-conference ledger that led them to a 13-5-5 overall record, their best since 2001 (15-6-0).
MAC ROAD SUCCESS: In 2008, EMU went unbeaten on the road in conference play, turning in a 3-0-2 mark. They defeated Kent State, Akron and Ohio and played to even draws at Buffalo and Central Michigan. The Eagles also outscored their opponents, 11-5, away from home. They will only have four games on the road this year, playing at Akron, Ohio, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois.
SHUTOUT STREAK SNAPPED: The Eagles' shutout streak ended in dramatic fashion Sept. 18, losing to IUPUI, 2-1, in double overtime. Their first goal occurred with 24 seconds left in regulation, halting the Eagles' scoreless streak vs. opponents at 379.5 minutes. That was the longest streak since Sept. 24-Oct. 6, 1999, when EMU held opponents scoreless for more than 466 minutes, spanning over five games and translating into four wins and a draw. They would continue their stellar play that season and finish with a 17-4-3 mark, 10-1-3 record in MAC play, on their way to MAC regular season and tournament crowns, and a trip to the NCAA National Tournament.
