YORKTOWN, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished Friday's opening round of the Cardinal Classic trailing host Ball State University by five stokes. However, by the time all the scores had been recorded Saturday at The Players Club, the Eagles had rallied to leapfrog the Cardinals to capture the tournament title with a 591 (298-293). BSU finished seven stokes back at 598 (293-305) followed by Grand Valley State University in third with a 599 (301-298).

The team total of 591 is the lowest 36-hole score in school-history, surpassing the standard of 600 (299-301) set at the NIU Brickyard Intercollegiate, Sept. 10-11, 2007. The final round team total of 293 is also tied for the third lowest single-round in school-history. Additionally, the team victory marks the 14th overall title in the program's 16-year history and the 10th during head coach Sandy Wagner's five-year tenure as head coach.

Freshman Emily Podzielinski (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville) made it a clean sweep for Eastern Michigan, when she captured medalist honors with a three-under 141 (72-69) for the two-round event. Podzielinski's victory was the first of her career in just her second collegiate event and her total of 141 becomes the new 36-hole EMU standard passing Stephany Fleet's mark of 143 (69-74) accomplished at the NIU Brickyard Intercollegiate, Sept. 10-11, 2007. GVSU's Allie Tyler finished one stoke off the pace at 142 (71-71) while Western Michigan University's Elise Swartout took third with a 145 (75-70).

Always steady junior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) continued her exceptional play with a fifth place finish. Peters shot four-over 148 (71-77) for the tournament and notched her ninth career top 10 finish as well as her fourth top five showing. Freshman Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) also tied for fifth place with a 148 (76-72) for her first career top 10 finish.

In addition to the EMU trio's fine play, junior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls Texas-Tech Univ.) finished tied for 28th with a 154 (79-75), followed by freshman Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario-Westside Secondary School) at 84th with a 178 (89-89). Playing as an individual, junior Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) placed 23rd following rounds of 77 and 76 for a two-day total of 153.

Eastern Michigan takes a week off before traveling to the Nittany Lion Invitational, Oct. 3-4, in University Park, Pa.
