YORKTOWN, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University junior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) equalled her career-low with a 71 in the opening round of the Cardinal Classic at The Players Club Saturday afternoon, Sept. 19. The Lake Orion, Mich. native sits in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Ball State University's Kristtini Cain and Grand Valley State University's Allie Tyler.
In the team standings, Eastern Michigan recorded a score of 298 and in is second place behind the Cardinals at 293. The Lakers carded a 301 to end the day in third place. Indiana State sits in fourth with a score of 304 while Xavier is fifth at 306. Ohio (310), Oakland (310), Northern Illinois (312), Dayton (312), Western Michigan (313), Depauw (324), IUPUI (325), McNeese State (328), Robert Morris (331), Findlay (334) and Trine (350) round out the first day scores.
It was a challenging day for nearly all 91 golfers as just five players shot par-or-better. Playing close to home, freshman Emily Podzielinski (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville) is tied for fourth place with a 72.Freshman Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) recorded a 76 for 18th place and junior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls Texas-Tech Univ.) managed a 79 for a tie for 36th. Playing in her first career event, freshman Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario-Westside Secondary School) managed an 89 to sit in a tie for 78th place.
Playing as an individual, junior Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) fired an opening round 77 and a tie for 25th.
The 16-team field will conclude the Cardinal Classic Sunday morning, Sept. 20, with an 18-hold shotgun start at 9 a.m.
