KALAMAZOO, Mich.-The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team dropped a 109-80 decision to Western Michigan University at the Jack Shaw Invitational Saturday, May 2. Despite the setback, the day was highlighted by standout performances from several student-athletes.
Sophomore Beverly Elcock (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Northrop) recorded a career-best in the 1,500-meters, winning the event with a time of 4:38.97. Natalie Webb (Allen Park, Mich.-Woodhaven) was close behind as she finished second with a time of 4:50.51. Rachel Hollinger-Janzen (Goshen, Ind.-Goshen) also picked up a victory, winning the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:37.50. Melissa Green (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights) was a close second, finishing with a time of 10:43.40.
In the 800-meter run, the Eagles finished two-three, with Christina Farrow (Detroit, Mich.-Renaissance) finishing second with a time of 2:17.50, while Lauren Quaintance (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western) was right behind her in third, running 2:22.60. In the 400-meter hurdles, Dejaa Shearer (Canton, Ohio-Glen Oak) claimed a second-place finish, running 1:06.70.
The Eagles recorded three victories in the field events. Rosie White (New Albany, Ohio-New Albany) also had a career-best performance in the long jump, leaping 19-04.25 for the win. Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) also won her event, taking first in the pole vault, clearing 12-03.50. Jasmine Gates (Virginia Beach, Va.-Tallwood) cleared 5-05.25 in the high jump to add a win a five points to the Eagles' tally.
In the relays, the Eagles took second in the 4x100-meter relay, running 46.53, falling to the Broncos by one one-hundredth of a second. EMU came back to record the win in the 4x400-meter relay.
The Eagles will wrap up the regular season Friday and Saturday May 8-9, traveling across the county to the University of Michigan for the Len Paddock Invitational.
