AKRON, Ohio-The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team sits in 10th place following the first day of action at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 14, at Lee Jackson Field. The host institution, the University of Akron leads after the first few scored events with 40 points, followed by Ohio (32), Kent State (17.5), Buffalo (14), Bowling Green (14), Ball State (10.5), Toledo (9), Miami (6), Western Michigan (5), Northern (3), Eastern Michigan (3) and Central Michigan (2).
The Eagles picked up three points on the Thursday, one in the 10,000 meters and one in the pole vault. Junior Jessica Novakowski (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Western) was the first to add points to the Eagles' team total, adding one point by placing eighth in the pole vault, clearing 12-01.50. Freshman Rachel Hollinger-Janzen (Goshen, Ind.-Goshen) added two more points to the total by placing seventh in the 10,000, running 37:34.74.
Day two of three of the championships will begin Friday at 10 am with the men's hammer, then the conclusion of the multi events. The afternoon will see several field event finals being contested as well as preliminaries for most of the track races.
