INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – With 36 holes in the books at the 2009 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in second place with a 580 (295-285). Kent State University leads the way after posting a two-under 574 (294-280) at the par 72, 6,994 yard Brickyard Crossing Golf Course.
Thursday's first round was delayed due to rainy weather conditions and players ended up teeing off at 10:15 a.m. with a shotgun start. The first day of action featured two 18-hole rounds with 18 more on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.
The Golden Flashes hold a six-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down the tournament's top three slots. EMU is in second place with a score of 580, followed by Ohio (593), Miami (597), Toledo (600), Bowling Green (604), Northern Illinois (607), Ball State (609) and Akron (610).
Individually, KSU's John Hahn shot a four-under 139 (71-68) to lead the tournament. Hahn and teammate Mackenzie Hughes (72-71=143 (-1)) were the only players in the field to finish the first day under par.
All five Eagles are ranked in the top 11, included senior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) and junior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) who are tied for fourth place with a one-over par 145. Sophomore Nic Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) notched a 146 (74-72) for sixth place tie. Juniors Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) are tied for 11th with a 148.
The third round of the 2009 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Friday, May 1, with the final round scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at 8 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com
