Men's Golf Remains in Second Place at MAC Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will need to rally in a big way Saturday in order to take home a third-consecutive Mid-American Conference title at the par 72, 6,994 yard Brickyard Crossing Golf Course. Kent State University owns a 25-stroke lead over the two-time defending champions Eagles after Friday's third round of the 2009 MAC Championship.

Head coach Bruce Cunningham's squad entered the day in second place, and left the course following Saturday's round in that same position. The Eagles carded a third round 290 for a two-day cumulative score of 870 (295-285-290). Tournament leader Kent State continued its scorching play with a 17-under 271 for a 845 (294-280-271) Friday and the 25-stroke advantage heading into Saturday's final 18 holes.

Kent State and Eastern will be joined by Toledo in the final five threesomes of Saturday's round. The Rockets put on a charge Friday to move from fifth into third place with a 887 (304-296-287). Rounding out the field in order are Ohio (295-298-297=890) in fourth, Ball State (307-302-285=894) in fifth, Miami (305-292-298=895) sixth, Bowling Green (299-305-292=896) seventh, Northern Illinois (306-300-292=898) and Akron (312-298-292=902) ninth.

Individually, KSU's John Hahn still holds the lead with an 11-under 205 (71-68-660) followed by teammates Brett Cairns and Mackenzie Hughes in second place at 212. BGSU's Matt Schneider is fourth with a 214 (70-77-67)

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 18, included junior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) and sophomore Nic Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) who are tied for sixth place at 217. Burke was the story of the afternoon with a hole-in-one on the par 3, 190-yard seventh hole. Senior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) is tied for eighth place with a 219 (73-75-73). Junior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) notched a 221 (73-75-73) to move into a tie for 13th place and junior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) added a 223 (77-71-75) for 18th.

The fourth and final round of the 2009 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 2, at 8 a.m. Following competition, MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportsmen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
