Eagles Wrap Up Action At Hillsdale and Drake

HILLSDALE, Mich./DES MOINES, Iowa—Several members of the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field squad competed at the 43rd annual Hillsdale College “Gina” Relays, April 24-25 at Ken Herrick Track. Other members of the team were competing at the 100th anniversary of the Drake Relays.
The Eagles turned in one NCAA Regional qualifying mark at Hillsdale, as senior Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) finished second in the invitational section of the 5,000-meter run, clocking in a time of 4:11.05. This is the third event that the Ottawa, Canada native has qualified for this season, previously doing so in the 1,500 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Blake Figgins (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) was just shy of an NCAA mark in the 800 meters, running 1:51.84 to win the event.
Following Karanja in the 5K, were Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western) who placed fourth with a time of 14:17.83; Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) was sixth with a time of 14:29.58. Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic) were seventh and eighth, respectively.
Senior Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) doubled the distance of the previous group, running the 10,000 meters in a time of 30:56.97, good for ninth.
In the shorter distances, the Eagles placed two in the 400-meter hurdles. Tymell Dodd (Lansing, Mich.-Sexton) and Daniel Collins (Cleveland, Ohio-Rhodes) clocked in times of 54.85 and 56.13 seconds, respectively.
Thrower Jarid Pearson (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western) took second in the shot put, tossing 52-08.00.
At Drake, the Eagles turned in several top performances in the relays. The 4x200 quartet of Clint Allen (Muskegon, Mich.-Orchard View), Koleon Prescott (Oakland, Calif.-Merritt College), Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central) and Ackeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbadoes-Cambridge & Parry) had the highest finish for the Eagles at Drake, placing ninth with a time of 1:26.13. Prescott, Blackwell, and Forde would then add Kyle Fortin (Fairview, Mich.-Fairview/CMU) to the mix to run a 4x400-meter time of 3:18.74.
The Eagles also had several atheltes competing in individual events. Prescott turned in an 11th place in te 100-meter dash, running 10.82. In the high jump, Xavier Clais (Paris, France) cleared 6-08.75 to place 10th
The Eagles will return to action May 1-2, at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
