Eagles sit in second after day one of the MAC Championship

AKRON, Ohio-The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team sits in second place following superb competition Thursday, May 14, from a pair of seniors on the first day of the 2009 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships. The University of Akron holds on to the lead spot with 29 points, followed by Eastern Michigan (15), Central Michigan (13),Kent State (12), Buffalo (6) and Miami (3).
Senior Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) succesfully defended his 10,000 meter title from last season, winning this year with a time of 30:43.06, collecting 10 points for the Eagles. Fellow senior Kyle Mena (Portage, Mich.-Portage) finished in fourth, clocking the 25-lap race in a time of 31:03.16. Both Perrin and Mena stayed with the lead pack of seven runners before Perrin broke away with a Central Michigan runner with about a mile left in the race. Perrin finally slipped into first with just under three laps left in the race, racing in for the win.
In other day one action, sophomore Kevin Lanier (White Lake, Mich.-Lakeland) competed in five out of ten events for the decathlong, sitting in second at the end of the day with 3,762 points.
Day two of three of the championships will begin Friday at 10 am with the men's hammer, then the conclusion of the multi events. The afternoon will see several field event finals being contested as well as preliminaries for most of the track races.
