Eagles Top Bobcats, 7-1

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team claimed game one of a three game set Friday afternoon, April 10, as the Eagles registered a 7-1 victory over the Ohio University Bobcats in a Mid-American Conference match-up at Oestrike Stadium.

The victory puts EMU at 8-23 (3-7 MAC) this season, while Ohio drops to 14-14 (7-3 MAC) with the loss.

Sophomore pitcher Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) had a solid outing for the Eagles, going seven strong innings, giving up one run on four hits, striking out five Bobcats to pick up the win, putting him at 2-2 this season. Chaffins also got OU's Marc Krauss to ground into three double plays on the afternoon, as Krauss finished the day 0-for-4 at the plate. OU's Chris Rigo took the loss, putting him at 3-2 this season.

Sophomore Matt Skirving (Midland, Mich.-H.H. Dow) belted his fourth home run of the season in the win, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Senior Kyle Rhoad (Fostoria, Ohio-Elmwood) finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one stolen base in the victory. Rhoad has tallied 18 stolen bases in 18 attempts this season.

The Bobcats put the first run on the board in the game, as Jerod Yakubic's double down the left field line gave OU a 1-0 advantage.

But Skirving would put the Eagles ahead an inning later, as his two-run homer over the right field wall plated Rhoad to make it a 2-1 game.

Junior Jim Gulliver (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) extended EMU's lead to three in the bottom of the fifth, as two-run single through the right side made it a 4-1 game. The Eagles tacked on three more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-1 lead, one they would not relinquish.

The Eagles and Bobcats are back in action for game two tomorrow, April 11, at 3:05 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
