MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell to Central Michigan University, 95-62, Saturday, March 7 at Rose Arena in the 2008-09 season finale. CMU took advantage of an up-tempo offense and pressing defense to record the season sweep.
With the loss, EMU ends the regular season at 8-20 (4-12 MAC). The Eagles' loss, combined with a Western Michigan loss to Northern Illinois today, gives EMU the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Kraft MAC Tournament, set for March 11-15 in Cleveland, Ohio. The Eagles, as the West No. 5, will face Miami, the East No. 4, Wednesday, March 11, at noon inside Quicken Loans Arena.
EMU was led by freshman Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) with 19 points with sophomore De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) hitting double figures with 15 point. Sophomore Tara Johnson (Flint, Mich.-Hamady) chipped in nine points and four boards. CMU put five players in double figures, led by Angel Chan with 25 points, including seven triples. CMU's Kaihla Szunko notched a double-double 20 points and 15 rebounds.
The Chips set the nets on fire, hitting 47.8 percent (32-for-67) from the field, while EMU managed a 33.8 percent (22-for-65) clip. The Eagles did out-rebound CMU, 46-41, but gave up 10 triples to the Chippewas.
The Chippewas took a 13-point halftime lead and never looked back in the second half, extending the advantage to as many as 33 points off a Kendra Holman three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining in the contest to provide the final margin.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 10-7 advantage, thanks to six points from James, but four consecutive points from CMU forced an EMU timeout at the 14:58 mark. CMU took a lead it would not relinquish off a Skylar Miller lay-in with 10:46 remaining in the first frame.
CMU maintained its lead for the rest of the half, hitting the break with a 50-37 advantage. James led the way for the Green and White with 13 points, while CMU had a pair of double-digit scorers in Chan with 14 and Szunko with 13.
