EAGLES HEAD TO THE “Q” FOR MAC MADNESS: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team begins its second season Wednesday afternoon, March 11, when it squares off against Miami University at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena. The Eagles are the fifth seed in the lower bracket of the 2009 Kraft Mid-American Conference Tournament and enter the game with a mark of 8-20 (4-12 MAC). On the other side of the court, the RedHawks are 15-14 (7-9 MAC) after defeating No. 25 Bowling Green (W, 45-40 – March 4) and Buffalo (W, 67-57 – March 7) to close out the regular season. Eastern is 12-14 all-time in 15 previous trips to the MAC Tournament, while Miami boasts a 22-20 mark in 24 seasons of MAC post-season play. The 1999-2000 campaign marked the first season that all teams qualified for the tournament. The Eagles are very familiar with the former Gund Arena floor, as they have posted a 6-6 record, including capturing the 2004 championship. The defending MAC Tournament Champion RedHawks have won seven of 13 all-time games in the arena, including a 67-56 victory over Ohio to capture the 2008 tournament title, March 15.

HISTORY WITH TEAMS IN THE TOURNAMENT: The Eagles sport a 12-14 mark in 15 trips to the conference postseason and are making their second under head coach AnnMarie Gilbert. The Eagles have faced Bowling Green (2-4) the most times of any squad in the tournament. Eastern is 2-2 versus Ohio, 2-1 against Toledo and 0-3 versus Kent State. Eastern is 1-1 in postseason play versus Ball State, Miami and Northern Illinois. The Green and White are 1-0 against Buffalo and winless in only one attempt against Western Michigan.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THE REDHAWKS: Wednesday's contest marks the 47th meeting between the RedHawks and Eagles, who first met during the 1979-80 season. Miami has dominated the all-time series, 34-12, but Eastern has won three of the last four meetings. In the earlier meeting this season between the Eagles and RedHawks, Eastern Michigan rolled to a 56-45 Valentine's Day victory over Miami at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio, Feb. 14. Senior Amber Land turned in the best game of her career, collecting nine points, nine rebounds and eight steals and freshman Tavelyn James scored a game-high 25 points en route to the victory. The last tournament meeting between the programs was in 2002-03 when the RedHawks defeated the Eagles 80-66 in the quarterfinals at then-Gund Arena.

EMU GETS TWO ON THE ALL-MAC SQUADS: Sophomore Cassie Schrock and freshman Tavelyn James have been named to 2009 All-Mid-American Conference teams. Schrock was selected honorable mention All-MAC while James earned All-Freshman team accolades. The All-MAC squads are the result of voting by the league's head coaches. Schrock cracks the All-MAC list for the first time in her career after posting a stellar sophomore campaign. Her scoring increased dramatically to 13.1 points per game in 2008-09, as the 5-foot-9 guard surpassed the 500 career points plateau versus the University at Buffalo, Feb. 11. Schrock has accumulated 567 points in 57 games, while going 163-for-451 from the floor and 222-for-293 from the charity stripe. Schrock became the 48th player in program history to score 500-or-more points in their career. The Wadsworth, Ohio native has started all 28 contests this season and leads the team in rebounding (7.4 rpg), free throws made (157), free throws attempted (200), steals (52) and double-doubles (6). Schrock also ranks second on the squad in scoring (13.1 ppg) and assists (88). She is among the top-15 in the MAC in scoring, rebounding, steals, free-throw percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio. James has made a name for herself not only in the MAC but nationwide in just her freshman season. The Detroit, Mich. native is ranked sixth among the nation's leaders in freshman scoring average at 14.1 points per game and is ranked 10th in the MAC in scoring. Currently, James is the team's leading scorer with 395 points and is looking to become the first freshman to lead Eastern Michigan in scoring since Holly Mitchell did so in 1997-98. In 27 games, the Detroit native is averaging 14.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.6 assists in 30.6 minutes per game. She leads the Eagles in points (395), field goals made (143) and field goals attempted (368). James is also ranked third in steals (47) and assists (46).
