Men's Golf Tied For Fourth In First Action of the Spring

DADE CITY, Fla. – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team opened up the spring portion of the 2008-09 schedule Friday afternoon, March 6, in fine fashion at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational. The Eagles combined for a four-under par 284 to sit in a tie for fourth place with Austin Peay State University after the first day of the 54-hole tournament, which is being played on the 7,153 yard, par-72 Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.
Juniors Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) both fired rounds of two-under 70 to sit in a tie for 13th place. Junior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) also notched a round under-par with a 70 for 20th place. Senior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) and sophomore Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) rounded out the lineup with a 73 and a 74, respectively. Competing as an individual, senior Joey Stimac (Burton, Mich.-Kearsley (Mott C.C.)) finished with a 78 in a tie for 99th place.
Missouri State shot a 281 in the first round and holds a two shot lead over the University of Louisville and Marquette University, who are tied for second place with a 283. The individual leader is Riley Wheeldon who finished the first round with a 6-under 66 followed by five players who finished with a 5-under 67.
