Eagles Go 1-1 on Final Day of Highlander Classic

RADFORD, Va. – The Eastern Michigan University softball team finished third at the Highlander Classic hosted by Radford University, falling to Harvard, 10-6, before ending the tournament with a 5-1 victory over Toledo. The Eagles are now 10-13 on the season.

In the first game of the day, No. 2 EMU squared off against No. 3 Harvard. Faced with a 6-2 deficit in the middle of the fourth inning, the Eagles were able to pull within 6-5 after putting up three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Harvard then answered with a four-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. The Eagles tallied 10 hits in the loss, led by freshman Sarah Gerber (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) who went 3-for-4 while classmate Kaylee Tolliver (Amanda, Ohio-Amanda Clearcreek) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Michelle Hletko (Westmont, Ill.-Westmont) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up nine runs, five earned, on 10 hits.
The second game of the day saw the Eagles take on Mid-American Conference opponent Toledo, with EMU coming away with a 5-1 victory. The Eagles took advantage of a four-run first inning to coast to the win. Sophomore pitcher Jaclyn Caro (Chino, Calif.-St. Lucy's Priory) continued to pitch well, tossing a complete game while giving up five hits with five strikeouts. Freshman Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak, Mich.-Burr Oak) hit the first home run of her career, while Gerber, McKenna Russ (North Canton, Ohio-Hoover) and Jenny Scherer (Stow, Ohio-Stow-Munroe) all went for two hits in the win.
Gerber, who went 10-for-16 at the plate over the five games, and Caro, who went 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA, were named to the All-Tournament Team for their efforts.
The Eagles hit the road for Dayton, Ohio Tuesday, March 24 for a doubleheader with Wright State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
