Men's Golf Takes Fifth Place at Linger Longer Invitational

The Eagles finish 28-strokes off the pace of top-ranked Georgia
GREENSBORO, Ga. – Competing against some of the nation's elite teams, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team again showed that it can hold its own on the links. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew finished in fifth place with a 54-hole total of 895 (299-288-308) Saturday afternoon at the Linger Longer Invitational. The nation's top-ranked team, the University of Georgia, rolled to the two-stoke victory over second ranked Oklahoma State University on the 7,048 yard, par-72 Reynolds Landing Golf Course.
Behind the Bulldogs and Cowboys, Wichita State University captured a third place showing with an 882 and Mercer University claimed fourth with an 885. The individual medalist was Trent Whitekiller of OSU, who finished the two-day event at eight-under 208 (74-68-66) followed by WSU's Connor McHenry and MU's Bill Jones at 209.
Junior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) was the top individual for the Eagles, earning a tie for seventh place with a one-over par 217 (74-69-74). Lemons' finish was his first career top 10 showing in 24 career tournaments. Additionally, his second round 69 was his fifth round under par this season and the 11th under-par round of his career.
Sophomore Nic Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) turned in the best showing of his young collegiate career with a 30th place finish with a 227 (79-70-78). Senior Christopher Ross (Dundas, Ontario-Parkside) and junior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) tied for 33rd with cumulative totals of 228. Rounding out the lineup, Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) totaled a 233 (78-78-77) for a tie for 48th in the 75 person field.
The Eagles return to action March 27-29 at the Spring Break Championship hosted by Florida Atlantic University in Del Ray Beach, Fla.
