YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season, defeating the University at Buffalo, 69-58, Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Convocation Center. Down five points with 7:58 to play, the Eagles used a 16-1 run that featured four three-pointers from De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) to retake the lead at 61-51. EMU would make eight clutch free-throws in the final 1:17 to seal the 11-point victory.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-17 (1-9 MAC) on the year while Buffalo falls to 5-18 (1-9 MAC). The Eagles were led by sophomore Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) who nearly notched the third triple-double in the program's history with 22 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in 39 minutes of work. Wills chipped in 12 points on four three-pointers while Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) hit double-figures with 13 points.
The Eagles shot 29 percent (20-for-70) for the contest, with Buffalo hitting at a 40 percent (20-for-50) clip. The Bulls out-rebounded the Eagles by one, 46-45. The Eagles took advantage of free throw opportunities, sinking 22-of-28 attempts for the contest.
A Wills triple with 7:38 remaining ended a 10-minute scoring drought from the field for EMU, bringing the Eagles back within a basket. Two more triples from Wills on the same EMU possession gave the Eagles a five-point advantage with 5:24 remaining. The Eagles found Wills once again on the ensuing possession, with the sophomore knocking down another trey to increase the lead to 59-51 with 4:47 remaining.
A pair of Schrock free throws pushed the lead to 10, 61-51 with a little over two minutes remaining in the contest. The Eagles would hit their free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
Coming out of the break, the Bulls went on an 11-4 run over the first five minutes to cut the halftime deficit of seven to a single point, 40-39, off a Kourtney Brown three-point play. The Bulls then took their first lead of the contest at the 12:51 mark when Bridgette Kendricks rebounded her own free throw miss and laid it off the glass to make it 44-42.
EMU took advantage of a fast-breaking offense in the early going, racing to a 13-5 lead with 13:44 remaining in the first, forcing a UB timeout. The Eagles would continue to turn Buffalo miscues into points, increasing the lead to 15 with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the first off a Huntley-Rogers' trey to beat the shot clock.
The Bulls would slowly chip away at the EMU lead throughout the remainder of the first, cutting the deficit to seven off a Brittany Hedderson 24-foot three-pointer as time expired to give the Eagles a 36-29 halftime lead. EMU was led by Schrock with 12 points and James with nine. The Eagles shot 38 percent (14-for-37) compared to 42 percent (10-for-24) for the visitors while forcing the Bulls into 14 first half turnovers.
The Eagles hit the road for their next contest, heading to Oxford, Ohio to take on the Miami University RedHawks, Saturday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is set or 4 p.m. at Millett Hall.
