OXFORD, Ohio – Behind 25 points from freshman Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and a near triple-double by senior Amber Land (Kulm, N.D.-Kulm), the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team rolled to a 56-45 victory over Miami University at Millett Hall. The Eagles used a 27-3 run to open the second half en route to the squad's first Mid-American Conference road victory of the campaign.

Land turned in the best game of her career, collecting nine points, nine rebounds and eight steals to become the second EMU student-athlete to record a near triple-double in as many games. James scored 11 of her game-high 25 points in the first four minutes of the second half, as the Eagles limited the RedHawks to a season-low 45 points. Miami's previous low in points was 53 against Ohio University, Jan. 21, in Oxford.

Sophomore Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) also notched 11 points for the Eagles, who improve to 6-17 overall and 2-9 in the conference. The win was EMU's sixth all-time in Millett Hall and the second consecutive in the venerable building. The only other time Eastern has won back-to-back games in Oxford was between 1986 and 1987 when head coach Kathy Hart guided the then-Hurons to the consecutive victories.

Jenna Schone led Miami with 12 points while Jaclyn Leininger added eight points and nine rebounds. Miami (13-11, 5-6 MAC) was hurt when injuries to Ashleigh Brown, Maggie Boyer and Erin Wisner forced them to miss the game.

Eastern shot 17-for-52 from the field for 33 percent clip, meanwhile Miami finished the game shooting just 18-for-59 from the field for 30.5 percent. EMU out rebounded Miami by two (43 to 41), along with creating 16 steals off of 22 RedHawks miscues off. The Green and White equaled a season-high with six blocks.

The Green and White jumped out to a 7-1 lead to begin the game, while holding Miami to 0-of-5 from the field and five turnovers.

The defending MAC Tournament Champion RedHawks would battle back to take their first lead, 14-11, at the 8:45 mark on a Briana Dunlap three-pointer. Miami would build a lead as large as five, 17-12, on a Leininger jumper with 6:46 remaining in the half. The teams exchanged buckets, before Eastern would regroup and close the stanza on a 12-8 run to take a 26-25 advantage into the locker room.

In the first 20 minutes of action Eastern Michigan was just 8-for-27 from the field for 29.6 percent, while Miami was 10-for-26 for 38.5 percent. James had 10 points to pace the Eagles while Shone had five for the RedHawks.

Following the intermission, MU's Ashley Hawkins opened the scoring when her layup gave Miami its final lead of the game at 27-26. James then scored a layup and hit three three-point field goals that were sandwiched around a Sydney Huntley-Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) layup to spurn a 27-3 Eagles' run that built the Eastern Michigan lead to 53-30 with 4:42 remaining in the game.

Miami would close the game with a 15-3 run of their own, however, it was too little, too late as Eastern held on for the 11-point victory.

The Mid-American Conference returns to divisional action Saturday, Feb. 21, as Eastern Michigan hosts Northern Illinois University at the Convocation Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. followed by the EMU men's basketball team hosting Georgia State University 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game.
