BEAUMONT, Calif. – Good things happen to those that wait. The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team proved that statement true after having to wait an extra day to open the 2009 spring campaign when the first day of competition at the Braveheart Classic was rained out and Tuesday's, Feb. 10, round was delayed due to frost conditions.
The Eagles carded a team score of 312 to record a second place finish on the par 72, 5,941-yard Oak Valley Golf Club. Nova Southeastern University took the title after shooting an 18-hole total of 305 - seven strokes better than EMU in second place and 11 strokes ahead of host California-Riverside (316).
Senior Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) continued her solid play with a third place tie with a three-over par 75. The finish was Fleet's 12th career top-five finish in 35 all-time events.
Junior Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Quebec-Therese-Martin) and sophomore Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) each notched rounds of 78 to tie for 10th. The showing was Thout's third career top-10 finish, while it marked the fourth time Peters had recorded a top-10 ranking.
Senior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) and sophomore Lina Pasquali (Kendallville, Ind.-East Noble) rounded out the lineup for the Green and White with an 81 and 82, respectively.
Cal Baptist's Malin Thorberg took home individual honors shooting a one-over par 73. Santa Clara's Miki Ueoka was one stroke behind Thorberg in second place.
Head coach Sandy Wagner's crew return to the links in The Golden State, Feb. 22-24, at the Eagle Invitational in Oxnard Calif. The event is being hosted by Morehead State University on the Victoria Lakes Golf Course.
