Freshman Karina Ahuja gives Eagles the win

Box Score

YPSILANTI, Mich.— A rally by the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team gave the Eagles the 4-3 edge over the University of Detroit Saturday evening, Jan. 31, at the Chippewa Racquet Club. The Eagles are now a perfect 8-0 all-time in the series over the Titans.

With the win, the Eagles even their season mark at 2-2, while the Titans drop to 1-2.

“This was a very good test for us early in the season,” said head coach Ryan Ray. “We didn't play particularly well as a whole in doubles but we did a great job at recovering, especially winning some tight first sets. Karina Ahuja did a great job at clinching the match, coming back from being down 4-1 in the second set. We'll have a lot more close matches and we'll keep working on getting better.”

With the match tied at three, freshman Karina Ahuja (New Delhi, India) battled in two sets with Detroit's Svetlana Flankova, and took the 7-6, 7-5, win as the clock struck midnight, giving the Eagles the win over the Titans.

The Eagles found themselves down early heading into singles, as Detroit took the doubles point. Ahuja and Xu Chang (Beijing, China) combined for the Eagles' lone point in doubles competition, defeating Aneta Maricevic and Erin Weldon by an 8-2 mark.

Senior Joanna Woo (Winnepeg, Manitoba) was the first Eagle to add a mark on the Eagles' side of the scoreboard, defeating Maricevic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Miriam Westerink (Rheden, The Netherlands) was next to collect a win for the Green and White and knot the score at two, beating Annie Moore in two sets, 7-6, 6-2. A win at the third flight by Chang in three sets over Zeljka Minic, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, would give EMU the slim one-point lead, 3-2, but the Titans would take the fifth singles flight and tie the match at three. The win by Ahuja solidified the win for Eastern.

The Eagles will be back in action Feb. 6, traveling west to take on Wichita State and Oklahoma State.
