Freshman was 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position over the weekend
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced its weekly award winners for tennis with Eastern Michigan University freshman Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya named the MAC Singles Player of the Week, the league office announced March 24. The rookie posted a 2-0 record at the top singles position to help the Eagles (10-8, 1-3 MAC) to a 1-1 record on the weekend and the team's first league victory of the season.
Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) had a solid week for the Eagles as she swept through her two opponents at No. 1 singles. She opened the weekend with a 6-4, 6-1 win at Bowling Green State University over junior Tia Clemens before capping the weekend with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of JJ Scholten of the University of Toledo, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year. Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya is now 3-1 in MAC play and is second on the team with 14 wins after helping the Eagles defeat Toledo, 6-1, for their first conference win of the season and back-to-back home wins over the Rockets for the first time since 2004.
The award for Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya is the second weekly honor secured by Eastern this season after Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) were named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week Feb. 16.
Eastern is back in action at home Friday, March 27, when the Bulls of the University at Buffalo visit the Chippewa Club for a 1 p.m. Mid-American Conference match.
