FOR THE 46TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 46th season for men's swimming and diving at Eastern Michigan University. Throughout the years, EMU has won 28 Mid-American Conference Championships, four NAIA Championships and was the NCAA Division II National Champion in 1972. The Eagles have only had three head coaches during its history of building one of the most successful programs at EMU. Bill Lewis began the program in 1964 before giving way to Mike Jones in 1968. Peter Linn has been at the helm of EMU swimming and diving since the 1988 season, leading the Eagles to 18 of the past 21 MAC titles.
SEEKING NO. 29: The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team will be looking to win its 29th overall and fourth straight Mid-American Conference title this season. Last year, the Eagles registered a school record 1,046.5 points en route to the championship. EMU has won the past three titles and nine of the last 10. They lost nine seniors to graduation entering this season, but welcomed 12 freshmen and 13 newcomers to start the year.
ABOUT THE BOILERMAKERS: Purdue University begins its season 3-0 after wins over Miami and Notre Dame, and most recently, Northwestern. The Boilermakers' 183-109 victory over the Wildcats was their first in Big Ten Conference action this year. Purdue won 11 of the 16 events last Saturday and were led by junior diver David Colturi who swept the one meter and three-meter dives. The Eagles and Boilermakers will meet for the second straight year.
LAST TIME OUT: Eastern Michigan extended its Mid-American Conference dual meet winning streak to 54 straight after a 180-120 win over Buffalo last Friday night. Matt Zavislak highlighted the swimmers with three wins over the Bulls. He helped the 400 Medley Relay team to a MAC-best time (3:25.02) and added individual wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle as well. Andrew Saunders and Jeffrey Craig each placed well in the one and three-meter dives. Saunders took second in the one meter while Craig took third. Craig then followed that up with a win in the three meter dive while Saunders placed second.
PACING THE MAC: The Eagles are plastered all over the Mid-American top times list. They hold the top time in each freestyle event except for the 50. Zavislak holds the top spot in the 100 (46.47), Kevin Kubik in the 200 (1:43.90), Troy Esentan in the 500 (4:41.68) and 1,000 (9:36.16), and Ricky Linders leads all MAC swimmers in the 1,650 free (16:35.83). Jacob Hanson paces all in the 200 backstoke (1:49.35) and 200 individual medley (1:54.37) swimmers while Scott Murphy is the leader in the 100 (58.01) and 200 breaststroke (2:04.42). Owen Grey has the fastest time in the 200 butterfly (1:53.93).
