Men's Golf Takes Fourth at 13th Windon Memorial Classic

Eagles finish better than five nationally ranked schools

GLENCOE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Competing against some of the nation's elite teams, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team again showed that it can hold its own on the links. Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew finished in fourth place with a 54-hole total of 882 (296-292-294) Monday afternoon at the 13th Annual Windon Memorial Classic. The nation's 10th-ranked team, the University of Illinois, rolled to the six-stoke victory over 36th ranked and host Northwestern University on the 7,081 yard, par-71 Skokie Country Club.
Behind the Illini and Wildcats, Kent State University captured a third place showing with an 876 and EMU claimed fourth. Brett Cairns of Kent State and Dan Obremski of Coastal Carolina shared medalist honors. The Eagles also finished on top of ranked foes No. 8 Tennessee, No. 19 Michigan, No. 21 Coastal Carolina, No. 25 California and No. 39 Minnesota.
Junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) was the top individual for the Eagles, earning a tie for 12th place with a seven-over par 220 (76-70-74). Carbary's' finish was his second career top 15 showing in 11 career tournaments. Additionally, his second round 70 was his first round under par this season and the seventh under-par round of his career.
Junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) turned in a 14th place finish with a 221 (76-73-72). Senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) tied for 22nd with a cumulative totals of 223 (75-74-74). Rounding out the lineup, seniors Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) and Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) finished tied for 47th and 65th, respectively.
The Eagles return to action Oct. 12-13 at the Firestone Invitational hosted by the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio.
