Women's Basketball Team Picked Fifth in the MAC West

Toledo and Bowling Green tabbed in preseason poll to win respective divisions
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the West Division according to the 2009-10 Mid American Conference preseason poll by the voting members of the league's media contingent. The announcement was made in Cleveland today as part of the conference's women's basketball Media Day.
The Green and White return nine letterwinners from last year's squad, including four starters, along with welcoming seven newcomers. Junior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) will lead the squad this year with the help of sophomore Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford). Youth will still be heavily served in 2009-10 with a combined nine freshmen and sophomores on the squad.
The University of Toledo was picked to win the West Division with 18 first-place votes. Ball State University is expected to finish second with 14 first-place votes and Northern Illinois University third with four votes. Rounding out the West Division were Central Michigan University, EMU and Western Michigan University. Bowling Green State University was tabbed as the preseason favorite in the East with 22 first-place votes.
The Falcons were also selected to win the 2010 MAC Women's Basketball Tournament, March 6-13, earning 16 votes.
Schrock, a 2008-09 honorable mention All-MAC selection led the Eagles in 2008-09 in rebounding at 7.4 per contest, and was second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game. Her backcourt mate, James, garnered All-Freshman team honors after led the team in scoring with 14.7 points per game, and finished the year with the sixth-highest scoring average among the nation's freshmen.
In just 10 days the EMU men's and women's basketball teams take to the court for the first exhibition games of the 2009-10 campaign. The women's team plays host to Madonna University, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m. prior to the men's team taking the court at 4:30 p.m. versus Concordia University.
