Men's Golf Edged for the Title at the Firestone Invitational

St. Mary's rallies down the stretch to capture the team title with a 869

AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – With winds howling at 20 miles per hour and temperatures in the mid-40s, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team entered the day clinging to a slim one-stoke edge at the Firestone Invitational. However, when all the scores had been turned in Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 13, St. Mary's College (Calif.) had rallied to take the lead and the tournament title with a five-over 869 (291-286-292). The Eagles garnered runner-up honors at the par 72, 7,06--yard Firestone Country Club with a two-day total of 870 (283-293-294).
Senior Marty Jeppesen's (Saline, Mich.-Saline) carded a final round 72 for a cumulate mark of four-under 212 (69-71-72), good for second place behind Western Carolina Universiy's Ricky Stout's 211 (69-70-72). The runner-up showing is the Saline, Mich. native's best showing of his career and is a 54-hole record for Jeppesen. His previous career-low for a three-round tournament was a 214 at the Wolverine Invitational, Sept. 20-21, 2008.
Senior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) finished tied for 12th place with a 220 (73-73-74) followed by a three-way deadlock for 16th place at 223 between Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan), Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) and Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central). Competing as an individual, junior Nicholas Banfield (Nova Scotia-St. Mary's University-South Mountain C.C.) finished with a 229 (75-74-80) in a tie for 42nd place.
Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew closes out the fall campaign Oct. 26-27 at the Aldila Intercollegiate Chattanooga, Tenn.
