EMU wins 52nd consecutive MAC meet

MUNCIE, Ind.
- The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team made it 52 in a row, defeating the Ball State University Cardinals, 125-107, Saturday, Jan. 24. EMU has reeled off 52 consecutive Mid-American Conference dual meet wins, having not lost since the 1997-98 season.
 
With the win, EMU improves to 4-2 on the year with a 2-0 MAC mark.
 
The Eagles got the meet started on a strong note, going 1-2 in the 400 medley relay before Dan Kish (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton) won the 1,000 freestyle. The Eagles once again went 1-2 in the 200 free, with Gilles Renard (Huy, Belgium-Athenee Royal de Huy) and Carlos Nunez (Beaverton, Ore. -Westview Portland) placing for the Green and White.
 
Senior Derick Roe (Sidney, Ohio-Sidney) continued his dominance in the 50 free, hitting the wall in 21.42. EMU had the top three finishers in the 200 IM, led by Don Ellison (King City, Ont.-King City Secondary). Matt Guinan (Victor, N.Y.-Victor Central) won the one-meter dive, marking the second consecutive win for the senior diver.
 
Ryan Fulkerson (South Lyon, Mich.-South Lyon) captured the 200 fly with freshman Matt Zavislak (Commerce, Twp., Mich.-Walled Lake Central) winning the 100 free. Mark Kurtzer (Newmarket, Ont.-Dr. Dennison) then won the 200 backstroke, sending the meet into exhibition scoring.
 
The Eagles conclude the regular season next weekend when they welcome Miami University to Jones Natatorium. The Eagles will honor their seniors before the meet, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
