SECOND MAC ROAD TILT: The Eastern Michigan men's basketball team will attempt to get back to the .500 mark in Mid-American Conference play when it travels to DeKalb, Ill. Tuesday, Jan. 20, for a West Division match-up with the Northern Illinois University Huskies. The Eagles are currently 1-2 in league action (3-14 overall) after a 69-57 setback at Toledo Saturday, Jan. 17. NIU is 5-10 and 1-2 in the MAC.
BOWDRY NAMED WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) was named the Mid-American Conference Men's Basketball West Division Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 18. This marked Bowdry's first career MAC weekly award. Bowdry averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and one assist to help EMU go 1-1 in MAC action last week. He turned in a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds in an 84-77 double-overtime win over instate rival Central Michigan University, Jan. 13, and followed that up with 14 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists in a 69-57 loss at the University of Toledo, Jan. 17.
DOUBLE-OVERTIME WIN: EMU evened its record at 1-1 in Mid-American Conference play with a 84-77 double-overtime win over a visiting Central Michigan University team at home in the Convocation Center Tuesday, Jan. 13. The overtime game was the first for EMU since a 75-72 loss, Dec. 29, 2007, against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the second game of the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. The last EMU overtime victory came at Central Michigan, March 2, 2007, when the Eagles captured an 87-83 win. The last double-overtime win came on Feb. 28, 1996 when Eastern recorded an 81-77 victory over a visiting Ohio University squad. EMU now has a 10-10 record in the last 20 overtime games.
FOR THE 112th TIME: The 2008-09 season is the 112th of intercollegiate basketball for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles. Eastern played its first season in 1897-98 and split games with Detroit, losing a 2-0 decision before coming back for a 4-0 victory. The 2008-09 season will also be the 35th for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was 1974-75 when the then-Hurons went 12-14 overall and 4-9 in the league. EMU has won three Mid-American Conference titles: 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1995-96, and the Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those years in addition to winning the tournament title in 1997-98.
EMU AND NIU: EMU enters Tuesday's, Jan. 20, game at Northern Illinois with a 3-14 overall record and a 1-2 Mid-American Conference mark. The Eagles posted a thrilling 84-77 double-overtime win over a visiting Central Michigan University team Tuesday, Jan. 13, at home in the Convocation Center. Saturday, Jan. 17, Eastern traveled south to Toledo and dropped a 69-57 West Division decision. Redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) continues to lead the Eagles with a 16.1 scoring average and a 6.9 rebound mark. NIU enters Tuesday's game with a 5-10 overall record and a 1-2 MAC record after dropping a 71-52 decision Saturday, Jan. 17, at Western Michigan. Darion “Jake” Anderson leads the Huskies with a 17.5 scoring average with Mike Dinunno at 12.9 and Sean Kowal averaging 10.6 ppg.
THE SERIES: EMU and NIU will be meeting for the 72nd time and Northern holds a 45-26 advantage in the series. Eastern won both battles last year, recording a 65-61 win in DeKalb, Ill., Jan. 16, and following that up with an 82-63 victory, March 9, in Ypsilanti, Mich. Eastern has won four of the last seven.
THIRD AND FOURTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR BOWDRY: EMU redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman) came up with a monster effort in EMU's 84-77 double-overtime win over Central Michigan Tuesday, Jan. 13. Bowdry turned in the fourth double-double of his career with 22 points and 14 rebounds against the Chippewas. The double-double was not only his fourth as an Eagle, but also his third this season. He scored 23 points with 10 rebounds against Chicago State, Jan. 3, and tallied 26 points with 14 boards against Marygrove, Nov. 14. His other double-double came during the 2006-07 season when he recorded 23 points with 10 rebounds as a freshman, Dec, 9, 2006, at home against Chicago State. Bowdry leads the Eagles in scoring, 16.2, and rebounding, 6.9.
JONES AND FRAZIER TURN IN BEST EFFORTS: Senior guard Tyler Jones (Belleville, Mich.-Belleville) and redshirt freshman guard L.J. Frazier (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) both turned in a career-best effort in EMU's 84-77 double-overtime win over CMU Tuesday, Jan. 13. Jones scored a career-high 22 points, including making 7-of-9 field goals and 7-of-11 free throws while Frazier set his career scoring best with 17 points, hitting 4-of-10 field goals and 3-of-6 3-point attempts.
REACHING 600/300: Junior center Justin Dobbins (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville) is the 72nd player in EMU history to reach the 600-point plateau with 623 heading into the NIU game, Jan. 20, 2009. Dobbins has played in 73 games, starting 59 times, and his 623 points is good for 67th in EMU history and his 318 rebounds is ranked 58th.
BOWDRY MOVES UP: Despite playing in just 49 games in his career, redshirt sophomore Brandon Bowdry (St. Louis, Mo.-Taylor (Mich.) Truman), is climbing the EMU career points and rebound ladder at a brisk pace. Bowdry, who has started in 44 of the 49 games in which he has played, is currently 81st on the EMU career scoring list with 539 points and his 290 career rebounds is 62nd.
