Eagles Tame Broncos in Season Opener

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team started its season on a positive note, as the Eagles registered a 190.500-180.125 victory over the Broncos of Western Michigan University today, Jan. 18, in Kalamazoo, Mich. in a Mid-American Conference match-up.

The victory puts EMU at 1-0 (1-0 MAC) this season, while WMU falls to 0-1 (0-1 MAC) with the loss.

Senior Duyen Zu Vuong (Ottawa, Ont.-DelaSalle) picked up where she left off last season, carding a team-best all-around score of 38.525 to lead EMU. The senior recorded a 9.675 on the vault, a 9.500 on the bars, a 9.725 on the beam, and a 9.625 mark in the floor exercise.

Junior Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ont.-Widdifield) had a stellar afternoon for the Eagles, carding a 9.725 on the vault, a 9.125 on the bars, a 9.150 on the beam and a 9.750 mark in the floor exercise, good for an all-around score of 37.750.

Freshmen Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) and Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Inst.) performed well for the Eagles in their first collegiate competition, as Yourick carded a 9.575 on the bars and a 9.425 in the floor exercise, while Wood registered a 9.325 in the floor exercise. Junior Mickayla Balow (Blaine, Minn.-Spring Lake Park High) also performed well for the Eagles, recording a 9.650 on the vault and a 9.700 in the floor exercise.

The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 25, when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. for a conference tilt with the Huskies of Northern Illinois University at 1 p.m.
