EAGLES LOOK FOR FIRST MAC VICTORY WEDNESDAY VERSUS THE ROCKETS: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team looks to snap a three-game losing skid Wednesday evening, Jan. 14, when the University of Toledo invades the Convocation Center. The Mid-American Conference West Division tilt is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Eastern Michigan enters the game still in search of its first league win of the year, following a 77-56 setback to Central Michigan, Jan. 10, that dropped the Eagles' to 4-10 (0-2 MAC). The rejuvenated Rockets are 8-7 (2-0 MAC) under first-year head coach Tricia Cullop and have won five of their last six contests.
THE SERIES VERSUS TOLEDO: Wednesday's contest marks the 58th meeting between the Rockets and Eagles, who first met during the 1977-1978 season. Toledo leads the overall series, 35-22. However, Eastern has won the last six consecutive meetings, including a 65-59 win last year at the Convocation Center, Jan. 12, 2008.
THE WESTERN BUCKEYE LEAGUE REUNITED: When the Rockets and Eagles tangle Wednesday evening a trio of Western Buckeye League alums will be on the Convocation Center court. EMU's Carla Warren played at Elida High School while Toledo's Allie Clifton graduated from Van Wert High School and Amber Heistan from Shawnee High School.
EASTERN LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK: Eastern Michigan's 0-2 start to the Mid-American Conference schedule marks the team's slowest start to a league schedule since the 2001-02 campaign. That season the Eagles started 0-3 before rebounding to finish with a 10-6 record in MAC play.
ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END SOONER OR LATER: EMU' 16-game winning streak over Central Michigan came to an end Saturday, Jan. 10, with a 77-56 setback at the Convocation Center. The Eagles' dominance over the Chippewas dated back to the 2000-01 season and included six different coaches (EMU – Suzy Merchant, Shane Clipfell, AnnMarie Gilbert; CMU – Ina Nicosia, Eileen Kleinfelter and Sue Guevara). During the seven-year span, the Eagles won by an average of 13 points (68.4 to 55.5) including posting a 37-point victory, 87-50, at the Convocation Center, Jan. 10, 2004.
WESTERN MICHIGAN ON THE HORIZON: Saturday's contest marks the 64th meeting between the Broncos and Eagles, who first played during the 1976-77 season. EMU leads the all-time series, 34-29, and have won five of the last six meetings. Last year, the Eagles posted a 67-61 victory at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich., Feb. 19, 2008. Meanwhile the Broncos notched an 83-72 victory at the Convocation Center, Jan. 23, 2008. Eastern has won three straight in Kalamazoo with the last loss occurring during the 2004-05 season, when Western captured a hard-fought 85-80 decision, Jan. 15.
HUNTLEY-ROGERS DROPS 33 ON BALL STATE: To say sophomore guard Sydeny-Huntley Rogers has found her shooting stroke would certainly be an understatement. In the Mid-American Conference opener versus Ball State, Jan. 7, the Cincinnati, Ohio native recorded a career-best 33 points on 11-of-24 shooting in 39 minutes of work. Her 33 points are the tied for the seventh most in the program's history.
VOTE JAMES, TAVELYN JAMES: The presidential election might be over but another race is just heating up – the battle for the Mid-American Conference's Freshman of the Year honor. Tavelyn James has already shown that she deserves heavy consideration for the award. In 14 games, the Detroit native is averaging 13.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 1.9 assists in 30.8 minutes per game. She leads the Eagles in both field goals made (71) and steals (33) and is ranked second in field goals attempted (174). James is ranked ninth in the MAC in scoring and is the leader in points per game among the five first-year student-athletes that crack the league's top 30. James also cracks the league's ranks in steals (fourth), free-throw percentage (fifth), minutes played (14th) and three-pointers made (15th).
NOW I'M FOLLOWING YOU: EMU currently holds the longest streak in the Mid-American Conference for most consecutive non-losing league campaigns at 10. Kent State had held the standard for above .500 campaigns at 17 dating back to 1990-91, but the Golden Flashes' streak ended last season.
EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 28th season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 193-256 record against conference foes and have posted eight straight winning seasons in the MAC. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 21-8, and the least versus Miami, 11-34. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 63 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 13.
