Loss snaps EMU's 16-game winning streak over Central

YPSILANTI, Mich
.- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team dropped a 77-56 Mid-American Conference contest to Central Michigan University, Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Convocation Center. The loss snapped EMU's 16-game winning streak over its in-state rival.
 
With the loss, the Eagles fall to 4-10 (0-2 MAC) on the season, while Central Michigan improves to 9-6 (1-1 MAC) on the season. The Chippewas were able to overcome 32 turnovers in the contest to record the win.
 
EMU struggled from the field all game, shooting just 28 percent (17-of-61) to go along with a 12 percent (2-of-17) clip from beyond the arc. Sophomore Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) turned in her fifth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds led the Eagles. Freshman Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) chipped in 12 points. CMU put four players in double figures, led by freshman Brandi Baker and junior Britni Houghton, who each scored 18.
 
Central Michigan built a 33-22 halftime lead and opened the second half on a 6-2 run,
but the Eagles quickly rattled off seven points of their own to pull within seven, 38-31, with 14:36 remaining. The two teams traded baskets for a few possessions before a Sydney Huntley-Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) trey with 12:26 to go brought EMU back to within five, 41-36.
 
The Eagles would get no closer than that, as Central then went on a 25-9 run over the next eight minutes to take a 21-point lead with  4:11 remaining in the contest.
 
The Chippewas came out of the gates on fire, taking a 20-9 lead with 11:27 remaining in the first frame, forcing an early EMU time out. Following the timeout, both teams went cold, each scoring only two points over the next four minutes.
 
After pulling within 10 points at the 7:52 mark, the Eagles went cold from the field, not scoring again until Schrock scored back-to-back buckets at the 3:05 mark to bring the home team back within nine, but the CMU lead would get no smaller than seven for the rest of the half.
 
CMU went to the locker room with a 33-22 lead. The Eagles struggled from the field in the first half, shooting only 21.4 percent (6-of-28) compared to 40.7 percent (11-of-27) for the Chips. Both teams struggled to hang onto the ball, combining for 31 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.. Leading the way offensively for the Eagles at the intermission were Schrock and James with six points each..
 
The Eagles are back in action Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they welcome the University of Toledo to the Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
