Olympic Streak Lives, Springer-Jones Represents EMU

Former EMU track and field standout Sasha Springer runs at Olympics.
BEIJING, China — Eastern Michigan University's 48-year Olympic track and field streak lives on as former EMU track and field standout Sasha Springer-Jones represented her native country, Trinidad and Tobago, at the 2008 Olympic Games in the 100 meters and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team.
EMU has had a track representative at the summer Olympic Games since Hayes Jones in 1960. The Eagles have had 15 representatives in 48-years, 13 men and two women.
In the opening round of the women's 100-meter dash, Springer-Jones advanced, running 11.55 seconds, finishing fifth. In the second round, she failed to qualify, running 11.71 seconds, finishing 40th overall in the 100. She will compete in the opening round in the women's 4x100-meter relay team Thursday, Aug. 21 at 9:05 p.m. (ET).
Springer-Jones finished off her eligibility at Eastern Michigan from 2001-2002. She was a four-time Mid-American Conference Champion, winning outdoors in the 100 and 200-meter dash in 2001 and indoors in the 60 and 200-meter dashes in 2002.
