Four Tracksters Named to Academic All-MAC Squad

All four named to the squad for the first time in their careers

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Mid-American Conference announced their 2008 Academic All-MAC track and field squad Wednesday afternoon and David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary's Catholic), Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean), Oliver Walther (Erfurt, Germant - Pierre de Coubertin Gymnasium) and Kalli Williams (Dexter, Michigan-Dexter) appear on the squad for the first time in their careers.
 
Brent, a junior mathematics major with a 3.35 GPA, was the MAC Indoor Champion in the mile, running to the win with a time of 4:14.18. He also finished fourth in the 800 meters at the MAC Championship. He was fourth in the 3,000 meters at the EMU Classic and third in the mile in the Gold Division at the Akron Open, running a MAC leading time of 4:04.58. He was third in the mile at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational and second in the 800 meters at the EMU Open.
 
Karanja, a junior political studies major with a 3.22 GPA, was the indoor MAC co-Most Valuable Performer after finishing second in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters and third in the mile at the Indoor MAC Championship. He won the 3,000 at the EMU Classic with a MAC leading time of 8:17.07 and was third in the 5,000 meters at the prestigious Meyo Invite, running a MAC leading time of 14:13.04. He finished second in the mile at the Simmons-Harvey Invite and at the EMU Open.
 
Walther, a sophomore international business major with a 3.95 GPA, won the silver medal in the long jump at the MAC Championship. He finished fourth in the long jump at the EMU Classic and 13th in the triple jump at the prestigious Meyo Invite. He was third in the long jump in the Blue Division and sixth in the Gold Division triple jump at the Akron Open.
 
Williams, a senior member of the women's track team, carries a 3.88 GPA in special education. She finished second in the 3,000 meters at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational and was fifth in the 3,000 meters at the EMU Classic. She finished seventh in the 3,000 meters at the Michigan Intercollegiates and fifth in the 3,000 and eighth in the mile at the BGSU Invite. Was 14th and 16th in the 5,000 and 3,000 meters, respectively, at the MAC Championship.
 
The 22-member team was voted on by the league’s Faculty Athletic Representatives. From among a list of student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
