YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Day one of the 2008 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded here Friday evening at Bob Parks Track in Bowen Field House. The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team sits in first place with 42 points, while the women's squad is in seventh with 17 points.
 
Men
The men’s team tallied 42 points in day one of competition including one individual win and one relay win.
 
Curtis Vollmar won his first MAC Championship, winning the 5,000 meters in a time of 14:36.88. Teammate Josh Karanja finished right behind him in a time of 14:41.20. The final Eagle across the line was Josh Perrin, finishing fourth with a time of 14:54.54.
 
Nate Blackwell, Jake DuBois, Blake Figgins and David Brent led Eastern to a win in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:57.89.
 
In the long jump, Oliver Walther added eight points for the Eagles, jumping 23-05.25 to finish second. Kyle Holmes notched in two points in his fifth place finish, jumping 22-08.50.
 
In preliminaries, the Green and White were successful at getting athletes into tomorrow’s finals.
 
In the 60-meter hurdles prelims, Eric Alejandro finished first in a time of 8.02 seconds while Tymell Dodd (8.33) and Kevin Lanier (8.36) finished fourth and fifth, respectively to qualify for tomorrow’s final.
 
Clint Allen was the top finisher in the 60-meter dash prelims, finishing with a time of 6.75 seconds. Allen also qualified for tomorrow’s 200 meter final where he sits in second in a time of 21.66 seconds. Also in the 200, Ackeem Forde will run in tomorrow’s final, sitting in sixth place.
 
In the 400 meters, the Eagles had all three of their participants qualify for the finals. Forde sits in second while Blackwell and Alejandro are third and fourth, respectively.
 
The Eagles did it again in the 800, qualifying three to tomorrow’s final. Figgins is first while Brent and DuBois are third and fourth respectively.
 
Kevin Lanier and Brad Waidmann had success in day one of the men’s heptathlon. Lanier sits in first place with 2,941 points while Waidmann sits in second with 2,896 points with three events running tomorrow.
 
Women
The women’s team tallied 17 points in day one, including one champion. Janice Keppler won her second MAC pole vault title today, clearing 13-02.50 for the win. She previously won the title at the 2007 outdoor conference meet.
 
Brittany Lockhart scored four points for the Eagles on her way to a fourth place finish, tallying 3,564 points, a career-best for the sophomore.
 
Dejaa Shearer, Melissa Green, Jasmine Gates and Beverly Elcock earned two points for the Eagles on their way to a seventh place finish in the distance medley relay.
 
Several Eagles qualified for tomorrow’s finals. In the 60-meter hurdles, Andrea Wheeler ran a season-best 5.67 seconds in the prelims to put her tied for fourth going into the finals.
 
In the 400 meters, Shearer sits in sixth place with a time of 57.39 seconds. Two athletes qualified for the finals in the 800 meters. Elcock sits in seventh place with a time of 2:15.89 while teammate Lauren Quaintance is within sitting within striking distance in ninth place.
 
Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the men’s heptathlon 60-meter hurdles. Men’s triple jump finals will begin at 1 p.m. and the running events start at 1:15 p.m. with the finals in the women’s mile.
