Abby Reenders leads the way with six kills
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to No. 14 University of Michigan, 3-0 (28-30, 18-30, 24-30), in the first match of the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge at Cliff Keen Arena.
The loss was only the second of the young season for the Eagles. The Green and White fell to 7-2 after the three-game loss. Senior Abby Reenders led EMU with six kills and ten digs, as the Green and White struggled to hit consistently. Jill Wolosiansky and Lauren Boehmer finished with five kills apiece, with Kate Sulewski chalking up 23 assists.
The Eagles trailed for most of the first game, forcing coach Kim Berrington to burn a timeout at 20-12. Following the timeout and a Michigan service error, the Ealges went on to score 10 of the next 15 points, leading to a Michigan timeout. The Eagles continued to close gap, finally knotting the game at 26. The Green and White took their only lead of the game following a Boehmer kill, to go up 28-27. The Wolverines rattled off three straight points to take the first game, 30-28.
In the second game, the Eagles struggled to put the ball down, finishing with a negative hitting percentage (-.029), compared to Michigan’s .265 clip. After being tied at 4-4, the Wolverines went on a tear, forcing another Eagle timeout at 15-8. Michigan’s Lexi Zimmerman rattled off three consecutive service aces to put the game virtually out of reach.
The Eagles rebounded to hit .243 as a team in the third game, but could not keep up with the Wolverines’ heavy hitting (.298). The scoring went back and forth until UM took a 16-12 lead, forcing an Eagle timeout. Following the timeout, the Green and White closed the gap to 20-17, but would get no closer the rest of the way, as they fell 24-30.
For Michigan, four players tallied double-digit kills, with Veronica Rood’s 14 leading the way. Sarah Daves notched 11 kills, with a .526 hitting percentage. Zimmerman finished with 49 assists for the match.
Both teams are slated to play later in the day. The Eagles will take on Xavier University at 3 p.m., for the second time this season. The Green and White beat the Musketeers last weekend, 3-1, to capture the Xavier Tournament title. The Wolverines and Musketeers will close out the day with a 7:30 p.m. match.
